The Hail Mary

The Hail Mary is sometimes called the "angelical salutation."  It is the most familiar and commonly said prayer to Mary.  The Hail Mary consists of three parts: the first contains words the Angel Gabriel used in saluting Mary (Luke 1:28).  The second is borrowed from the salutation greeting St. Elizabeth gave to Mary upon their meeting (Luke 1:42).  The third part was inserted into the first Catechism of the Universal Catholic Church by the Council of Trent in 1566.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,
now, and at the hour of our death.  Amen.
